WhatsApp Marketing for Restaurants: What Works, What Gets You Blocked

WhatsApp is where Indian guests actually read messages, which is exactly why it is so easy to abuse. Used as a wallet and a reminder, it is the strongest retention channel a restaurant has. Used as a broadcast megaphone, it gets you blocked in a week.

Earn the opt-in at the counter

Enrolment is your consent moment. When a guest gives their number for rewards, tell them plainly what they will receive: their points balance, expiry reminders and the occasional offer. Consent gathered honestly is the difference between a channel and a nuisance.

The four messages worth sending

  • Balance after billing — 'You earned 45 points, balance 320.' Transactional, expected, and it quietly reminds the guest they have value waiting.
  • Second-visit nudge — 14 to 21 days after a first visit, with the reward already credited.
  • Win-back — triggered at 1.5× that guest's normal gap between visits, never on a fixed calendar.
  • Expiry warning — one message, roughly a week before points lapse. This one has the highest return rate of any campaign type.

Frequency discipline

Two to four messages a month per guest is the practical ceiling, and most of those should be triggered by the guest's own behaviour rather than your calendar. A single untargeted blast to your whole list will out-earn a targeted send once, and cost you a chunk of the list permanently.

Write for a phone screen

  • Lead with the value, not the greeting — the preview line is all most guests read.
  • One action per message, with a booking or menu link.
  • Name the outlet the guest actually visits, especially for multi-store brands.
  • Always include how to stop receiving messages.

Measure returns, not opens

The only metric that matters is visits attributable to the message within a defined window. Tie each send to the points ledger so you can see which guests came back and what they spent, then retire the campaigns that only produce reads.

Frequently asked

Do I need the WhatsApp Business API?

For templated, at-scale sends, yes. For a single outlet starting out, a wallet link and expiry reminders through your loyalty platform cover most of the value.

How often should I message loyalty members?

Two to four times a month at most, and mostly triggered by their own behaviour — a bill, an approaching expiry, or a lapsed gap.
